Theatrical Weaponry and Handgun Policy

The safety and wellbeing of all participants, staff, and audiences are of paramount importance to The Impulse Company. The following policy outlines the guidelines for the use of theatrical weaponry, including handguns, in rehearsals, performances, and workshops, wherever possible.

1. Legal Compliance

All activities involving theatrical weapons must comply with local laws and related regulations. This includes the possession, transportation, and use of replica or deactivated firearms, stage swords, and other weaponry, wherever possible.

2. Approved Theatrical Weapons

  • Only deactivated firearms, replicas, or props designed specifically for theatrical use are permitted.
  • Live ammunition or functioning firearms are strictly prohibited.
  • Bladed weapons must be dulled and approved for stage combat.

3. Specialist Oversight

  • All weaponry must be handled under the supervision of a qualified Armourer or Fight Director with experience in theatrical weaponry, where necessary.
  • Weapons should only be introduced into a rehearsal or performance once safety protocols have been reviewed and approved.

4. Storage and Transportation

  • Theatrical weapons must be securely stored in locked containers when not in use.
  • Transportation must comply with local law, and weapons must not be visible to the public.

5. Training and Safety

  • All actors and crew involved in handling weapons must have either received comprehensive training from a certified professional, or be prepared to obtain training.
  • A safety briefing must be conducted before each rehearsal or performance where weapons are used.

6. Use During Rehearsals and Performances

  • Weapons may only be handled by authorised individuals who have undergone proper training.
  • All weapon-related scenes must be choreographed and rehearsed under the guidance of a Fight Director, where possible.
  • Weapons must never be aimed directly at another person unless explicitly required for the scene, in which case safety distances and protocols must be observed.

7. Reporting and Inspections

  • Any incidents, malfunctions, or safety concerns must be reported immediately to the Administrator, Erica Chestnut, and production manager if one is engaged.
  • Weapons must be inspected before and after every use to ensure they remain safe and functional.

8. Audience Awareness

  • If theatrical weaponry will be used during a performance, appropriate notices must be displayed at the venue to inform audiences in advance.

9. Insurance and Liability

  • Productions involving theatrical weaponry must have adequate insurance coverage to address potential risks.
